The Base Unit Goes Where the Signal Reaches: Install and Range-Test the Alert Pendant Start to Finish

Set the base, walk the range test room by room, mount only after the map is clear, then run the test call and write it down.

The pendant is only useful from the places it can reach. Before anyone drills a hole or plugs in a base unit, you need to know where the signal has to go. Work in this order: read the setup sheet, pick the base spot, walk the range test, mount, run a test call, then set a weekly check.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Step 1: Read the setup sheet before the box is open

Find the manufacturer's install guide and the monitoring company's setup sheet. Check whether the base needs a working phone line, a cellular connection, or Wi-Fi, and what happens during a power cut. Check whether the base and the pendant each have a battery, and how each battery is replaced. Write those answers on the sheet you keep with the box.

Step 2: Pick the base spot by the outlet and the far room

Put the base near a working outlet and, if it uses a phone line, near the jack. Choose a spot that is central to the rooms your parent uses most, usually the bedroom, the bathroom, and the main sitting area. Avoid placing it inside a metal cabinet, behind a refrigerator, or against a large mirror. Keep it off the floor, and keep the cord out of walking paths.

Step 3: Walk the range test before you mount anything

Plug in the base and let it finish its startup. Then take the pendant to each room, to the bathroom doorway, to the spot beside the bed, and to the tub or shower area. Press the button from each place and note which spots connect and which do not. Wear the pendant the way it will be worn, on its cord or clip, not held in your hand. Test the bathroom twice, once with the door open and once with it closed, because tile and walls can change the signal.

Step 4: Mount only after the map is clear

Once every needed spot connects, mount the base where the test passed, not in a convenient spot nearby. Mark the position with painter's tape before drilling so you can match it to your test notes. Use the hardware in the kit and the anchors that suit the wall. Leave enough slack in the cord that it does not pull on the outlet.

Step 5: Run the test call and write down the answers

Ask the monitoring office for a test call. Confirm they can hear your parent, and that your parent can hear them through the base. Then ask what happens after a button press: who is called first, how long the office waits, and what they do if no one answers. Write the answers next to your test notes and keep the monitoring number on the sheet by the phone.

Step 6: Set the weekly check

Name one person to press the button and confirm the call once a week. Check the pendant's battery indicator, the base light, and the outlet. If a hired helper is in the house, show them where the pendant is and what the button does, but keep the test call and the monitoring follow-up with the family. After any furniture move, repeat the room test, because a layout change can break a signal path that worked before.
