How this desk is written, checked and paid for
A family making decisions on a deadline deserves to know where every sentence came from and who, if anyone, paid for it.
Who publishes it
After the Hospital STL is published by OwnersFirm, a St. Louis company that runs reference desks for families and owner-led businesses. The desk has one subject, the days between a hospital saying a parent can go home and the second week after she gets there, and one reader in mind: the adult child, usually a daughter, who has just been told her mother "can't be alone" and has to work out what that means before the car pulls in.
Pages carry a desk byline rather than a named author. Nobody writing here is a nurse, a doctor, a social worker or a lawyer, and a byline with a person's name and a stock headshot would invite exactly the wrong kind of trust.
How a page gets written
A real question comes first. Each article starts from a sentence families actually type, such as "can I refuse to take my mother home from the hospital". The headline is that question in her words.
Public sources, opened and read. The answer is built from pages published by Medicare and CMS, federal regulations, the Missouri Revisor of Statutes and the state health department, the National Institute on Aging, national caregiving nonprofits, and the hospitals' own public pages. A source is cited only after the page has been opened and the sentence we rely on has been found on it.
The fact is the link. A rule or a number links to its source in the sentence that uses it. The sources page lists every URL with the date it was opened. Phone numbers on the homepage and the local help page were read on each organization's own site on September 12, 2026.
Tasks in order. Pages are written the way a friend with a pen would talk you through it: short sentences, the next job first, and no pep talk.
The paid placement
One company pays to appear on this site. New Plan Care Solutions, an independently owned non-medical in-home care company in Chesterfield, Missouri, is a client of OwnersFirm and pays for the featured slot at the foot of the homepage and for the boxes marked "Paid placement, disclosed" at the end of articles. The two companies are not commonly owned. The placement is always labeled, it is never a ranking or a score, and it did not buy or shape the articles above it.
The only form on the site sits in that featured slot. It sends a name, an email address, an optional phone number, how you prefer to be reached and a short note to New Plan Care Solutions at newplancare.com, so a person can get back to you the way you asked. Please do not type medical details into it. The site loads no tracking tags or pixels.
What this desk will not do
- Diagnose, interpret a symptom, predict how she will recover, or give advice about a medicine. Those questions go to her care team or her pharmacist, and every article says so.
- Print a price or a price range it cannot source. No public file records what private home care companies charge by the hour.
- Rank or criticize a hospital, a facility or a company. Hospitals appear only as maps to their own public pages.
- Invent a number, a quote, a review or a family story.
- Tell you that you have to do it all yourself. Missouri's CARE Act is quoted here because it says being named a caregiver does not obligate anyone to perform after-care tasks.
Corrections
Public pages change, and Medicare rules and phone lines move. When a sentence here drifts from the page it cites, the public page wins and the wording here is corrected at the next review, with the new check date on the sources page. If you find something wrong, tell New Plan Care Solutions or OwnersFirm through their public websites and ask that it reach this desk. A correction that changes what a family should do is made first and explained second.
