Install and Set Up
Light the Route Before the First Night: Install the Path Lights Start to Finish
The first night home is when the bed, the hall, and the bathroom all matter at once, so set the route lighting in the order the parent will walk it, and test it in the dark before anyone relies on it.
The first night home puts the bedroom door, the hall, and the bathroom door in use at the same time. Install the lights before that night, not after the first stumble.

Walk the route with the parent in the room
Ask the parent to walk from the bed to the bathroom at the pace they will really use, with the walker or cane they will really have. Note where the path is dark, where the turn is tight, and where the parent reaches for a wall or a door frame. Those spots are where light matters most. If the parent cannot walk the full route yet, ask the hospital team or the therapist which parts they would plan around, and mark those places.
Count the outlets before you buy anything
Plug-in motion lights need an outlet near each light and a cord path that stays off the walking line. Count the outlets on the route and note which ones are already in use. If the route needs an outlet that does not exist or does not work, stop there. Adding or changing wiring is work for a licensed electrician, not a weekend project. Do not solve a missing outlet with an extension cord across the floor.
Install in the order you walked
Start at the bed end and work toward the bathroom, so the last light you install is the one that shows the way in. Mount each light at a height that keeps the bulb out of the parent's view from the bed. Run cords along a wall or behind furniture, never across the floor path. Keep the cord clear of the walker wheels. Use a cord clip or an outlet cover if a plug sits low.
Test it in the dark, the way it will be used
Turn off the room light and walk the route yourself, then have the parent walk it with the walker. Check whether the lights come on from the bed side, from the doorway, and from the bathroom door. Check whether each light stays on long enough for a slow walk. Adjust the sensitivity or placement until the route is lit from the first step. If a light flickers, unplug it and check the outlet before using it again. Repeat the test after the first full night, because the parent's pace at night may differ from what you saw by day.
Write down what you set
Write down the outlet each light uses, the bulb or battery type, and the path of each cord. Keep the note near the bed so the next person who changes a bulb knows the setup and does not have to guess.
